As a fourth and fifth point, we describe the trading routes by which rice entered and circulated within the Hanseatic realm, and determine the quantities of rice imported.

Finally, we discuss prices, analyzing specific examples of merchants trading in this product. The intention of this article is to draw attention to the archaeobotanical and historical sources which demonstrate that rice was a Hanseatic commodity.

Retting pits for textile fibre plants at Danish prehistoric sites dated between more. During the last decade, a new type of structure has been found at several archaeological sites in Denmark.

These structures can be interpreted as having been used for retting the stems of textile plants such as Linum usitatis-simum L These structures can be interpreted as having been used for retting the stems of textile plants such as Linum usitatis-simum L.

In order to obtain fine threads for textile production, these plants need to pass through several biological and technical processes.

The first process is the retting of the plant stems to dissolve the pectin which fixes the fibres to the stalk.

This can either be done by water retting, where the plant stems are soaked in lakes, rivers or waterlogged pits, or by field retting, where the stems are laid out in a field in order to absorb dew.

The first method is shorter in time and the process is easier to control. In this article, details of archaeological structures are presented from eight sites in southern Scandinavia that can be interpreted as textile plant retting pits.

The constructions of the pits are described, as well as the archaeological contexts and the relevant associated archaeobotanical records. Some of the presented sites, of which the oldest are dated to the late Bronze Age and early pre-Roman Iron Age — B.

Botanical finds of figs Ficus carica L. As the climatic conditions, at least north of the region of modern Denmark, As the climatic conditions, at least north of the region of modern Denmark, is too harsh for breeding ripe figs, even during the warmest phases during the 14th century, we must conclude that the figs were imported from more southerly areas.

Written sources were for the first time studied in order to trace information on the trade with these fruits. Numerous evidences enlighten the origin and trading routes of figs, as well as their different use in various dishes.

We will try to enlighten in our lecture in which kind of sites and features the archaeobotanical fig finds were most frequently detected.

The written sources inform about the persons and circumstances under which figs were consumed during Conference: Culture, Climate and Environment Interactions at Prehistoric Wetland Sites 11thth Harvest success in plant foods is highly dependent on the local weather conditions, as well as on the given environmental requirements as e.

During the 2nd to 1st millennium BC the spectrum of staple food plants used by During the 2nd to 1st millennium BC the spectrum of staple food plants used by communities that lived in pile dwellings along the lakeshores and bogs around the Alps changed, similar to the contemporaneous spectrum used by communities living far to the north in Southern Scandinavia.

A new cereal species, called spelt Triticum spelt was now being cultivated. This hulled wheat is robust against harsh weather conditions and does not require such nitrogen-rich soils when compared with other cereals.

Two more staple food crops called millet Panicum miliaceum and field bean Vicia faba are frequently recorded from the Late Bronze Age period onwards.

Millet is characterised by a very short growing period only lasting between weeks. Beans are known to give nutrition back to the soil by their root tubercles which produce nitrog Publication Name: Vegetation History and Archaeobotany.
